Product Description
Sky Pirates! Sleeslup Worms! Ice cream trucks in outer space! These are just a few of the wild and wonderful creations that await you in AKIKO VOLUME ONE, the first book in Mark Crilley's "The Menace of Alia Rellapor" trilogy.
Summer vacation has only just begun when 4th grader Akiko is whisked off to a distant galaxy and put in charge of a perilous mission on the planet Smoo, where she soon gets a crash course in adventure that will dazzle and delight readers of all ages. Dive in and discover the rollicking writing and eye-popping artwork that earned AKIKO a spot on Entertainment Weekly's "It List."
About The Author
Mark Crilley was raised in Detroit, Michigan, where his parents allowed him to indulge his habit of telling tall tales from a very early age. After graduating from Kalamazoo College in 1988, he travelled to Taiwan and Japan, where he taught English to students of all ages for nearly five years. It was during his stay in Japan in 1992 that he created the story of Akiko and her journey to Smoo.
First published by Sirius Entertainment as a comic book in 1995, the bi-monthly AKIKO series has since earned Mark Crilley numerous award nominations (including over a dozen Eisner Award nominations in just six years), as well as a spot on Entertainment Weekly's "100 Most Creative People in Entertainment" list in 1998. His novelization of the comic series from Random House Children's Books is Crilley's first work of fiction for young readers.
He currently lives with his wife, Miki, and their son in Royal Oak, Michigan, just a few miles from the streets where he was raised.
Reader Reviews This is a well written comic with flat, but appealing artwork. However, be aware that this comic plays to the younger set (as more comics should). So if you are into Transmetropolian or Sandman, don't expect this book to stimulate your jaded senses. The stories have a magical, adventure quality, much like the C.S. Lewis "Narnia" series. Your grade-school child can do far worse than to read this book, and you may find yourself liking it too...
