Product Description
Computer Imaging: Digital Image Analysis and Processing brings together analysis and processing in a unified framework, providing a valuable foundation for understanding both computer vision and image processing applications. Taking an engineering approach, the text integrates theory with a conceptual and application-oriented style, allowing you to immediately understand how each topic fits into the overall structure of practical application development. Divided into five major parts, the book begins by introducing the concepts and definitions necessary to understand computer imaging. The second part describes image analysis and provides the tools, concepts, and models required to analyze digital images and develop computer vision applications. Part III discusses application areas for the processing of images, emphasizing human visual perception. Part IV delivers the information required to apply a CVIPtools environment to algorithm development. The text concludes with appendices that provide supplemental imaging information and assist with the programming exercises found in each chapter. The author presents topics as needed for understanding each practical imaging model being studied. This motivates the reader to master the topics and also makes the book useful as a reference. The CVIPtools
software integrated throughout the book, now in a new Windows version, provides practical examples and encourages you to conduct additional exploration via tutorials and programming exercises provided with each chapter.
Reader ReviewsThis book is the perfect mix of theory and practical techniques to learn how to develop applications in the imaging field. I have used it in my classes and it is an excellent textbook. The CVIPtools software environment that comes with the book is great for exploring imaging concepts and really gives the students some valuable experience in the field. The programming experience they gain is directly applicable - I have had graduate students who have completed their research using CVIPtools. The book is well organized and the exercises are very useful to both the teacher and the students. The exercises include analytical problems, tutorials using the software and programming exercises. The tutorials are wonderfully instructive. I find the students respond to being able to apply the algorithms and see the results immediately, as they vary parameters and explore various possibilities. This also makes the lectures much more interesting and allows the instructor to create an active learning environment. If you have Dr. Umbaugh's previous book, you will find the new material on feature extraction and pattern classification to be very useful for the computer vision courses, and the new material on visual perception very useful for the digital image processing courses. Many new algorithms and an update of the previous material make this book a necessary addition to your imaging library. The new CVIPtools for Windows is a great improvement over the previous UNIX versions. The Solutions Manual and the PowerPoint slides are a great help for those of us who teach in the imaging field. I use the book for two courses - Computer Vision and Digital Image Processing. I highly recommend this book to any teacher who needs a great book to teach with, or to any student, engineer or scientist who wants to learn about imaging on their own. This book is an invaluable resource.
