Reader ReviewsMr. Pok has written a remarkable personal account of tragedy and triumphal survival during the horrific reign of Pol Pot in Cambodia. I highly recommend this book to those who have perhaps only passing knowledge of this segment of history (as I did). The author's very informative narrative begins with descriptions of Cambodian culture and everyday activities before the emergence of Pol Pot. In a brief, dreadful turn of events, the author, who was about 11 years old at the time, and his family are thrown into the living nightmare of genocide in which approximately two million Cambodian people died. Told through the perspective of the child, the book gives a gripping account of the family members' efforts to survive separation and overwork, and lack of food and medical care. Mr. Pok has included photos of his family which provide for an even more personal effect. I did not want to put this book down until I learned what the final outcome was for each of the family members. It is truly a fascinating account as well as a fine tribute to Mr. Pok's family.
