For leaders interested in taking their thinking and skills up a notch or two, Tom's book is a must-read. --Chris Sullivan, co-founder and chairman of Outback Restaurant Partners, Inc. magazine Entrepreneur of the Year, Horatio Alger Winner
In five decades serving as a philosophy professor with a special interest in professional ethics, I have been particularly interested in the relationship between ethics and leadership and most concerned about the importance of good character to good leadership.
Make It Glow by Tom DeCotiis does one of the best jobs among contemporary works of making these relationships clear. He promotes the idea of a company culture flowing from the vision and mission articulation of its leaders. Any company that achieves the 'glow' of permanent success will maintain a culture focused on good character (in its leaders and all of its stakeholders) and on the commitment to the well-being of others, including both stakeholders and those served by the company. His approach reflects an Aristotelian framework of moral virtue and he adds to the four classic Greek virtues (wisdom, courage, temperance, and justice), the virtues of humanity and transcendence. In addition to this emphasis, throughout the book one finds continuous return to the 'pillars' of character, which the author maintains are integrity, credibility, and balance. He includes several specific examples of companies which 'glow' and details the policies which brought this quality to Southwest Airlines, Outback Steakhouse, Inland Homes, and others. He does this in plain language which reflects both his years of solid experience and research and just plain solid common sense. This book is a primer and a must-read for those who wish to start, sustain, or rejuvenate a company with the potential to achieve 'glow.' --Mal Wakin, PhD, Colorado Springs, Colorado
Product Description
Some companies just seem to have that special something--an atmosphere of success and trust that makes customers return again and again, employees stay and give their all, and suppliers offer their best prices and performances. In
Make It Glow, DeCotiis shows readers the hard processes and practices behind the warm and fuzzy feelings, and demonstrates exactly how important those feelings are to success. Whether the business in question is a new startup or a decades-old enterprise that's lost its reason to be, making it glow means making it prosperous, meaningful, and a source of pride. With DeCotiis's methods, companies can sustain success and the rewards that come with it far beyond just the next quarter.
Reader ReviewsI found this book to be a challenging exercise in broadening my thought processes in not only the basic "how to" but also the "fabric" in which you build your business and have it endure. The author offers philosophies and practices that I found helpful and challenging in both Dimension and Direction. Dimension - This book takes what can be a typical linear process of the 123s / ABCs of building a business and puts 3 Dimension into the foundation and fundamentals of a culture. I came to a realization after reading the book that while I continue to try to work harder and harder to excel at checkers (linear)...I can raise performance and build a vibrant culture by thinking in 3 Dimensional chess concepts. Directional - There were numerous practical ideas and practices throughout the book of what companies do to build a vibrant brand and enduring culture. After recognizing the many dimensions of building a culture, I was also encouraged that one can take the core pillars of the philosphies in the book and then/thus build foundational and fundamental "to-dos" within an operational business. Lastly, I found the book's focus on people, culture and all the rewarding things that come out of human goodness to be an encouragement to build a "best-in-class" culture that will "Glow" brightly for a long time.
