Product Review
An absolute gem of a reference guide, Cisco TCP/IP Routing Professional Reference brings the empyreal realm of routers and protocols solidly to earth. The author provides great analogies coupled with practical tips, making this book suitable for those new to the strange terrain of Cisco routers and TCP/IP networking as well as for the seasoned pro. It also boasts what may be the clearest explanation we've encountered of the seven-layer Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, an oft-repeated instance in which the author nimbly avoids technobabble.

The first two chapters lay the groundwork for operating Cisco routers within the context of the TCP/IP protocol suite and are absolute must-reads for networking novices. From there, he dives headlong into such nitty-gritty subjects as configuring Cisco routers and implementing popular WAN technologies like Frame Relay and ISDN.

The book wraps up with two exceedingly practical chapters: the first looks at how to build a TCP/IP router-based network and covers such key issues as management and security; the second is devoted exclusively to troubleshooting. Not only does the author break down troubleshooting OSI layer by OSI layer, but he also liberally sprinkles the text with practical advice. A shining installment, Cisco TCP/IP Routing Professional Reference marks yet another entry in McGraw-Hill's rapidly improving catalog of computing titles. --Sarah L. Roberts-Witt --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Reader Reviews
If you are looking for a book on TCP/IP and only TCP/IP this is not the book you need, but if you are working towards any Cisco Certification that this book is a must have. Completely breaking down TCP/IP and relating it to the CISCO IOS has this book getting the top rating. Lewis's expertise in the area of TCP/IP is what makes this book the handy reference you need by your side. The author is detailed, accurate and complete. While this book is not tailored to specific exam it will aid in any Cisco Certification you are planning to take. The is an abundance of figures, diagrams, actual router screen shots, tables, and router commands to give you the one go to reference manual. In just over 480 pages Lewis takes nothing for granted making sure you have the most up to date information right at your fingertips. The book covers IOS version 11 and 12 as well as a detailed breakdown of TCP/IP in a Cisco environment, WAN technologies, troubleshooting, VPN and firewalls. Overall an excellent book, however the one drawback maybe the price.
