Routers and Routing Basics CCNA 2 Companion Guide is the official supplemental textbook for the CCNA 2 course of the Cisco Networking Academy Program. About The Author
Wendell Odom, CCIE No. 1624, is a senior instructor with Skyline ATS, where he teaches courses on QoS, CCNA, and CCIE lab preparation. He has worked in the networking arena for twenty years, with jobs in technical consulting, teaching, and course development. Wendell has written portions of more than 12 courses and numerous Cisco Press titles, including the best-selling CCNA Exam Certification Guides. He lives in Cincinnati.
Rick McDonald teaches computer and networking courses at the University of Alaska Southeast in Ketchikan, Alaska. He holds a B.A. degree in English and an M.A. degree in Educational Technology from Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA. After several years in the airline industry, he returned to full time teaching. Rick started in the Cisco Academy in North Carolina and taught CCNA and CCNP courses to students and was a CCNA Instructor Trainer. Previous Academy projects include authoring CCNP study guides and technical editing a previous edition of the CCNA 2 and 3 textbook. His current project is developing methods for delivering hands-on training via distance in Alaska using web conferencing and NETLAB(r) tools.

Although this book is centered on the preparation for the reader to take one of the CCNA examinations, it is more than that. In reality this book is an excellent introduction into the whole concept behind routing as conducted 'a la Cisco.' It covers routing in general and then gives an excellent introduction into the Cisco products that handle routing. Since Cisco is the largest provider of routing equipment this book serves as a source of information as to just which Cisco products are best suited for your particular application. Beyond simple routing, which is complex enough, in today's world security is always a problem. This book goes into some considerable details in the descriptions of security aspects, including a full chapter on Access Control Lists to limit who has access to what data. Of course the book is basically oriented to passing the test, and if that is your goal here is the information you need, including sample questions and more. The CD included with the book has more material, including interactive media explaining some 25 activities visually demonstrating key topics and a Flash-based simulation and visualization learning tool.
