Reader Reviews
Mara liked living in Little Pine. She had Nanny Lynn to teach her how to fish and how to talk to God, but Nanny Lynn could't live for ever, and Mara had to move to Burl with Aunt Elna. In Burl Mara met General, an older boy, who raped her repeatedly. Mara didn't even know the name for what had been done to her, but she knew it was wrong. General threatened to kill her if she told. But who would she tell? Aunt Elna never listened to her anyway. The lonely little girl had one friend in Burl, Camilla, but then Aunt Elna died and Mara had to move to the other side of town. Now she even went to a different school than Camilla, so they didn't see much of each other anymore. Mara had dreamed of living in the big white house, but now she was there and it wasn't what she had expected. Zady was the housekeeper in the big house, and for the first time since Nanny Lynn died, Mara had someone to love her. Gradually, with Zady's help, life began to change, but danger still stalked Mara. Then one day something wonderful happened and life would never be the same. You'll suffer with Mara, rejoice with her, and most of all you will love her. This is a beautifully written book about a difficult subject. You'll remember Mara long after you have finished the book.
