This IDC Insight looks at and analyzes the impact of IBM's announcement and delivery of Virtualization Engine (VE) technology across its IBM eServer product line. All four lines of the IBM eServer product family (zSeries, iSeries, pSeries, and xSeries) will eventually have support for the VE - starting with the iSeries models shipping in 2Q04. Other eServer models will ship with VE support later this year. Beyond that, IBM is preparing VE system services that can leverage the VE system technology capabilities shipped with IBM eServers and the IBM TotalStorage storage products to achieve cross-platform, virtualized computing in which servers and storage are seen as resources that can run incoming workloads as needed.
