Product Review
The NT Server exam focuses on the skills required to create and maintain workgroups that exchange information on Windows NT-based networks. This book talks you through the process of installing NT Server on a machine, integrating that machine into a network, and getting the machine and its clients to perform needed functions.
MCSE: NT Server 4 Study Guide begins by helping you think through the planning of a network--something that appears in a couple of the Sybex MCSE books. Lots of attention is given to selecting server hardware (particularly storage hardware) and getting NT properly configured at installation. Later chapters address performance tuning, post-installation addition of hardware and non-storage devices, such as modems and printers (shared and otherwise).
NT Server has everything to do with networks, so protocols get plenty of space in these pages. TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, NetBEUI, and AppleTalk are covered to the extent that you need to understand them for the exam. RAS (Remote Access Service) gets its own chapter, which is appropriate because it's a large (and potentially confusing) part of the exam. The authors also give lots of attention to intranet operations, server management, and integrating NT machines with a NetWare-based network.
Throughout the book, you'll find Q&A sections that mimic the exam and exercises that help you master the skills you need. Understand the material in this book thoroughly and you'll pass the NT Server exam.

Reader Reviews
This review is from: MCSE: NT Server 4 Study Guide, 2nd ed. (Hardcover)
Well you can say I am a fan of Sybex books, not really, I just try to stay with my both feet on the ground, and I believe if a book helps you pass an exam, it is certainly not bad, or at least it did something right. This book is not the best I have seen from Sybex, in my opinion it left two important things. First, the answers for review questions at the end of each chapter were not explained. This is something very important when you are studying, because you want to know the WHY!!!!!, why were you right or why were you wrong. Second, I agree with another reader that said that they left the Novell section out. Believe me, even if you don't like Novell or you think is outdated, you have to know how to make it work with Windows NT and the services Windows NT has for Novell. I passed the test on my first try and 30% of my test had to do with Novell. I really didn't have a problem since I am a CNA and I do work with Novell every single day, but if you have no experience with Novell try going a little deeper on this subject. To double check what you understood I would recommend a small book like the NT Server 4 Exam Cram from Coriolis ISBN 1-57610-190-8. This is a small simple review book that has a lot of questions with its answers, and tells you at the end of a chapter where to find more information on each subject. Well I guess that's about it. Good luck on your test.
