Book Description
This IDC study provides a top-down sizing of the application server
software platform (ASSP) market in 2003 and a 2004Â?2008 forecast for North America for this market. 2003 revenue estimates and forecast revenue through 2008 are shown for the North American geographic region and by operating environment. For information about 2003 results and the 2004Â?2008 forecast in Western Europe, Asia/Pacific, and the rest of the world (as well as competitive analysis and information on market dynamics in those regions), see the respective IDC subscription services for those regions and the IDC
software Market Forecaster database.
"Open-source, functional convergence, and industry/role-based value propositions are the things to watch to understand this market," says Dennis Byron, vice president of BPA and Deployment
software Research at IDC. "And they're strongly related: The way for the 'closed-source' community to stay ahead of the 'free-software movement' is to offer more functions than the next guy, and it is most likely those functions will be industry and/or role based. And even then, we think that any lead will be short-lived and the total commoditization of ASSP functionality will happen this decade."
