Product Description
As the price of servers comes down to the level of desktop PCs, many small- and medium-sized businesses are forced to provide their own server setup, maintenance and support, without the high-dollar training enjoyed by their big corporation counterparts. Upgrading and Repairing Servers is the first line of defense for small- and medium-sized businesses, and an great go-to reference for the experienced administrators who have been asking for a reference guide like this one for a long time! It's all here in one, incredibly useful tome that you will refer to again and again.
Inside is in-depth coverage of server design and implementation, building and deploying, server hardware components, network and backup operations, SAN, fault tolerance, server racks, server rooms, server operating systems, as well as SUN Microsystems servers. No other computer hardware book has ever dared tackle this enormous topic - until now!
Back Cover Copy
Servers are the heart and soul of businesses today. Scott and Jarret tackle the confusing array of server design form factors, power supplies, rack mounts, dual processor setups, RAID, blade technology, InfiniBand, clustering, load balancing and replication. The authors address these topics from an OS-neutral standpoint, focusing solely on how the hardware works, how to choose the right gear, how to install it, and what to do when your beloved server melts down. Although the server community has pined for such a book for years, conflicting design and implementation standards, prohibitive pricing and a "roll-your-own" mentality amongst server professionals prevented a book such as this from becoming reality. All of that changes today. Because of plummeting prices and the emergence of design standards, it's now possible for the garden variety IT manager to make server buying decisions or save the company thousands of dollars in consulting fees - provided he or she has this book.
Reader Reviews
This book is great if you're interested in page after page of the history of the CPU. Or if you want a schematic of every motherboard and all it's traces. I mean really, if I've got a server that's giving me problems is one of the things that's high on my To Do list "be sure to check traces on M-bd"? Give me a break. If you're looking for a book that provides practical information for upgrading and maintaining servers this book misses the mark, almost completely. It's crammed full of all the wrong information and reminds me of so many of the tech's I've dealt with from time-to-time over the years that have (for one reason or another) become so completely out of touch with the real world "hands on" activities the typical system and/or network admins deal with on a day-to-day basis. VERY DISAPPOINTING!!!
