Book Description
Schools are completing the implementation of hardware infrastructure, or upgrading it, universities are consolidating their networked infrastructure to support seamless knowledge sharing and management of digital student files. Servers and disk storage systems will be critical components of those infrastructures.
IDC survey results outline the key characteristics of current server and storage infrastructure in Western European education institutions and also the investment plans for storage capacity and technology. The survey shows that storage capacity is expected to increase, though less than in other public sector verticals, and in some cases there will be a shift from direct attached internal storage toward network attached storage (NAS) and direct attached external storage.
"Schools and universities are expected to invest in collaborative technologies, elearning platforms, education portals, and student management systems. As a result, the amount of digital information will grow and generate higher demand for storage capacity. To ensure redundancy of access to information in a networked environment, education institutions will invest more in NAS, direct attached external storage, and in some cases SAN," said Massimiliano Claps, senior research analyst, IDC European Vertical Markets.
