Reader Reviews
If you've been following the industry there is not much new here. About 3 - 4 chapters were interesting to me. And it's not a thick book. Mostly facts. Their speculation on the future is probably not all accurate. For example I think they are missing the boat on subscription services which I believe will not be very large or influential. However their speculation that merchandise that is peripheral to music will be larger profit center is probably accurate. Good book for a naive but aspiring young musicians. Book is really not about music but merchandising. EDIT: I wrote this long before Apple signed an agreement with EMI to distribute non DRM music with higher sample rates. When Apple signed I though "Now what? People will have to re-purchase their entire iTunes collection." But I was wrong and Apple is smarter than I am. They are just charging a little for the upgrade. This effectively means EVERY song they sell is now a subscription as it is upgraded and added to. So I was wrong about subscription, but not about the older type of subscriptions. Smart people at Apple.
