Since the birth of the Internet in 1969, Transmission control protocol/internet protocols (TCP/IPs), the underlying protocol foundation of the Internet, has been evolving along with the modern communication technologies and has become more and more complex. In order to thoroughly understand Internet protocols, a network engineer must understand not only their operations and message formats, but also how they are related to one another. And sometimes this can be a daunting task. In this book, author Mark Miller takes a different approach by combining the basic concept and principles with case studies. The book consists of three major parts: packet transport, application support and network management. At the end of each part, there are extensive case studies. In these case studies, Miller presents and analyzes the packets captured during network transactions to illustrate how different protocols work together on a real world network. With packets captured using a network protocol analyzer, readers have the opportunity to look into the protocol headers, and to examine how protocols negotiate and operate. This provides readers a complete picture of the Internet protocols and helps them to better understand each protocol's unique function in the layered architecture. The author begins this book with a brief review of the history of the Internet and how it has evolved from the original ARPANET to today's Internet. Then he introduces the OSI Reference Model and analyzes the Internet protocols in a layered architecture. Next, Miller explains how data is encapsulated in the Internet Layer and Data Link Layer, and how a domain name is mapped into a Internet Layer address and then into a Data Link Layer address. Then, he focuses on the routing protocols that facilitate the delivery of datagrams from the source to the destination. Next, the author studies the two end-to-end protocols, TCP and User Datagram Protocol (UDP), and thoroughly discusses the TCP state machine and TCP congestion control algorithms. Chapter 6 is dedicated to the next generation of the Internet protocol, IPv6. Miller examines the IPv6 addressing architecture, header extension as well as the routing enhancement for RIP, OSPF and BGP. He also analyzes the IPv4 to IPv6 transition strategies such as dual IP layer, IPv6 over IPv4 tunneling and transition routing between IPv4 and IPv6 routing domains. Then, through case studies, the author analyzes the operational characteristics of IP, TCP and UDP in great detail. After that, Miller discusses the Upper Layer Protocols such as File Transfer Protocol, Telnet, Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, NetBIOS and Hypertext Transfer Protocol. Next, the author focuses on voice and data convergence. He reviews not only signaling protocols such as H.323, Session Initiation Protocol and Media Gateway Control Protocol but also the Quality of Service of Voice over IP. Then, with the aid of case studies, the author analyzes the operation of both data and voice application protocols. In the last section, Miller discusses the network performance and management issues, and demonstrates how to use Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and Remote Monitoring (RMON) probes to manage IP based networks. This book mainly focuses on the format and architecture of the network protocols rather than how they function, readers with networking experience will benefit more than network novices. It also contains in-depth discussion on new technologies such as IPv6 and Voice over IP.
