Reader Reviews
This book provides a framework about how to make decisions /today/ based on where technology will be /tomorrow/. The author, Dr. Lee Martin, defines this framework as Techonomics, which is also the title of the book. The fundamental element of Techonomics is a techonomic metric (TM), which Dr. Martin defines in the book and demonstrates through many examples. A TM essentially captures a technology trend and attempts to tie an ecomonic value to that trend. One example that Dr. Martin points to is the well-known Moore's Law that states computer processing power doubles every 18 months while costs stay fixed. Moore's Law is a TM. As an illustration of Techonomics in action, Dr. Martin also relates his own story of building a company known as IPIX. Dr. Martin was a key founder and innovator in the growth of IPIX, and he demonstates in the book as to how he used TMs to guide IPIX technology decisions. Those decisions transformed IPIX from a small startup to a highly successful IPO. This book has many examples of TMs that will help the interested reader to define their own TMs suitable to their own technology interests. Additionally, a theme throughout the book is an interesting parallel of technology and economics to Darwin's theory of evolution. This parallel and the TM concepts are enlightening and instructional. I would highly recommend this book to technologists, innovators, and business managers that need an economic tool to manage technology decisions.
