Product Review
To troubleshoot networking problems effectively, you need to know what solutions there are.
Novell's Guide to Troubleshooting NetWare 5 steps in to show you how to install, configure, maintain, and improve Novell NetWare 5. More than a guide to tracking down and repairing problems, this book provides quite a bit of background information on Novell's networking solutions
You'll want to consult this book if you're looking for specific instructions on how to, say, create disk partitions under NetWare 4.x or step through driver problems on DOS machines. The author inserts lots of notes into his text--and not the throwaway, obvious kind that characterize many books either. These are mainly troubleshooting hints that explain what can go wrong and (usually) how to fix it. The only problem with these notes is that specific ones are hard to locate in a hurry. For certain problems, there are listings of key system files.
Novell's Guide to Troubleshooting NetWare 5 serves its readers well by paying attention to the entire NetWare universe, not just the portion that runs Windows 95. If your enterprise--or part of it--still runs MS-DOS machines or Windows 3.x, you'll find plenty of relevant management and troubleshooting information here.
--David Wall Topics covered: Network protocols, configuring various NetWare servers (versions 3, 4, and 5), and Novell Internet Access Server.
Product Description
With its new TCP/IP developments, JavaTM compliance, and a host of added or improved system administration features, NetWare 5 introduces a whole new dimension in enterprise networking -- and a whole new set of challenges. Reader Reviews
This book offers a tremendous amount of helpful content. However, that content is often blurred by bad attitude and poor writing. Throughout the book, the author makes remarks that can easily be seen as pot-shots at other Novell "experts". This attitude clouds the issues at hand, and in some places completely confuses the reader. Even worse than the attitude-filled prose are the many typos and poor editing in this book. In some places, these typos and misplaced words completely change the context of the sentence, and the user is left to make up his/her own decision on what was intended. Buy this book if you must, but don't rely on it as your sole source of info. Novell should take responsibility for technical books sold for its benefit. In the last ten years, I've read a lot of technical documentation, and this qualifies as one of the top 5 worse books from an easy-of-reading standpoint.
