Gr 4-6--These books take interesting topics and turn them into dull explanatory paragraphs with comprehension questions. Each volume is accurate, except that, in Codes, Smoothey states that the Romans had a 22-letter alphabet, and includes V as one of the 22 letters. There were in fact 23 letters; V was not part of the Roman alphabet before Julius Caesar; K and Y were, although Smoothey doesn't list them. The best of the three titles is Maps; it presents good basic information and is the most readable. The pen-and-ink and colored-pencil illustrations have a generic textbook look; graphs and diagrams are adequate. Strictly additional purchases.
