About The Author


Louis Davidson has been in the IT industry for over 15 years as a corporate database developer and architect, spend the majority of his career with Microsoft SQL Server from the early days of 1.0 to whatever is the latest version currently in beta. He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in computer science with a minor in mathematics.



Currently Louis is the data architect for Compass Technology (www.compass.net) in Chesapeake, Virginia, leading database development on their suite of nonprofit–oriented CRM products, built on the Microsoft CRM platform and SQL Server technologies.

Robin Dewson has been hooked on programming ever since he bought his first computer, a Sinclair ZX80, in 1980. He has been working with SQL Server since version 6.5 and Visual Basic since version 5. Robin is a consultant mainly in the city of London, where he has been for nearly eight years. He also has been developing a rugby–related website as well as maintaining his own site at www.fat-belly.com.



ADAM MACHANIC is an independent database software consultant, writer, and speaker based in Boston, Massachusetts. He has implemented SQL Server solutions for a variety of high-availability OLTP and large-scale data warehouse applications, and also specializes in .NET data access layer performance optimization. Jan D. Narkiewicz is chief technical officer of software Pronto, Inc. His areas of expertise include Microsoft technologies, Oracle, and DB2. Jan also writes books for Apress and serves as academic coordinator for UC Berkeley Extension’s .NET/Windows program. His clients include E*TRADE, Visa, eBay, and Oracle.

Tom Rizzo, the lead author, is a director in the SQL Server group at Microsoft. Being an eleven year veteran at Microsoft, Tom has worked on a number of the different Microsoft server technologies such as BizTalk, SharePoint and Exchange Server before joining the SQL Server group. Tom is a published author on topics ranging from SQL Server to developing collaborative applications using Microsoft's collaboration servers.



Joseph Sack works for Microsoft as a SQL Server Dedicated Support Engineer in the Premier Field Engineering team. For 10+ years, he has been developing and supporting SQL Server environments for clients in financial services, IT consulting, manufacturing, retail and the real estate industry. He is the author of SQL Server 2005 T–SQL Recipes and SQL Server 2000 Fast Answers for DBAs and Developers. He is the co–author of Pro SQL Server 2005 and Beginning SQL Server 2000 DBA: From Novice to Professional.



Julian Skinner has been developing applications for over a decade. He has used a variety of Microsoft development technologies to create applications for both commercial and government entities on the Microsoft .NET platform. During his time as both a software developer and an IT consultant, he has been a part of all aspects of the SDLC, ranging from technical requirements gathering to deployment in large–scale environments. He has designed databases, implemented business logic components, and designed user interfaces for both Windows and web applications.



Rob Walters works with Microsoft as a data platform technology specialist covering the Northeast district. Rob’s extensive experience with Microsoft SQL Server started over 8 years ago when he worked as a consultant for Microsoft Consulting Services in Denver, Colorado. Shortly after the dot–com bubble burst, Rob returned to Microsoft’s headquarters and worked as a program manager in the SQL Server product unit. There he owned various features within SQL Server including SQL Server Agent, various management features, and the security for the database engine. Rob is lead author on Accelerated SQL Server 2008 and has coauthored other texts including Pro SQL Server 2005. Mr. Walters holds a bachelors of science in electrical engineering from Michigan State University and a masters degree in business administration from Seattle University. When not thinking about databases, he enjoys spending time with his wife, children, and two St Bernard dogs.

This books seems to be a list and quick summary of new features of sql server 2005. I like the fact that the authors do make an attempt to explain why the new features are present and how to use them. However I would not call it a professional book since it does not dive into depth in any one particular feature on how to take advantage of these features and how to implement something like it in a production environment. All we have is short demo samples which is good for explaining but not really helping the dba/developer integerate it with their existing systems and applications as seen in more advanced/architecture books. I fell asleep a few times whilst going thru this book. It could do with alot more pictures too to keep the motivation going A very good intro to sql server 2005 but you still going to need to buy a book for each topic/chapter on this book to be competent user since there simply isn't enough information/examples in it Comment | | (Report this)
