In a thorough and engaging conversational style, Raelin has distinguished this relatively new domain from its past incarnations such as adult learning or cooperative education. In doing so, he has articulated an updated vision for management development that is at once intellectually sound but also contemporary in approach. The traditional approach to management development focuses heavily on tools, but very little upon creating an environment where work practices can be observed and reflected upon. By using the workplace itself as the locus for learning, it creates specific competencies around the unique needs of the firm while forming the basis for further, adaptive growth as circumstances change.
