Product Review
If you want to create data-driven Web pages but don't know where to start, you might find this book useful. Dreamweaver UltraDev is the high-end version of Macromedia's leading Web-authoring product, which lets you build online database applications without having to write much code.
Dreamweaver UltraDev explains the basics of Dreamweaver itself and shows how UltraDev's features make it easy to add dynamic content.
The book explores each topic using step-by-step examples, complete with large screen shots so that you can check the progress at every stage. Topics covered include planning an application, using HTML forms, designing a database, displaying live data in Web pages, and using SQL (structured query language) for more advanced queries. Search forms; inserting, editing, and deleting records online; writing custom code; and sending e-mail from your Web site are also explained.
As with any data-driven Web site, it is important to understand that you need a suitable application server. UltraDev supports Active Server Pages (ASP), JavaServer Pages, and ColdFusion. Most of the examples here use ASP, making it easy for Windows users to try them out using
Microsoft's free Personal Web Server.
Aimed squarely at beginners, this book does not go into great depth. Its advantage is its friendly, accessible style combined with satisfying hands-on examples.

Book Description
Dreamweaver UltraDev combines the best features of Dreamweaver with UltraDev. UltraDev allows designers, programmers, and developers to visually create and edit data-driven Web applications on multiple server platforms. Dreamweaver UltraDev Fast & Easy Web Development introduces you to the wide variety of functions that can be achieved using a server-side scripting language. It covers the expanded functionality of UltraDev--the support for industry servers, integration with leading development tools, and its extensive database support. This book is great for Web developers, programmers, or designers who may be familiar with Dreamweaver or UltraDev, but are looking for a quick learning tool to get up and running with Dreamweaver UltraDev. The visual, step-by-step format is great for users with little or no experience using this products predecessors.
Reader Reviews
If you have experience with Macromedia products and their manuals you will know how poorly written they are. Its to the point that sometimes you wonder whether Macromedia should even try writing the manuals. The UltraDev manuals are no exception. While the manual tells you about UltraDev's features and the basic steps for those features, they rarely give good real world examples. That where this book comes in. As the name implies the author will get you using UltraDev quickly. The author does a good job showing how to connect your web pages to databases. Included are examples for ColdFusion, ASP, and JSP. The author also goes into using XML to generate custom menus and dialog boxes. With so few books available on this program, this is a must have. The book did get me up-and-running quickly, but I can see there will be a point soon where the book will have outlived its purpose. Get this book if you are like me, new to UltraDev. Even if you are experienced in the Dreamweaver environment, but haven't been using UltrDev, this book will help. Since I am not experienced with UltraDev I can't speak to how effective the book is for experts.
