I actually found a newsprint copy of this book rotting off the shelves in a bookstore here in the Philippines. The book is quite old, its pages yellowed, and when I skimmed its first few pages, I had second thoughts whether I should buy this book or not. For one, it looked quite text heavy and I felt it was too technical and a dull read. But for lack of a Linux manual and, since the book is quite cheap, I bought it anyway. I wasn't disappointed at all. Unix SVR4 User's Guide is actually an easy read, so don't be misled by its boring cover. Upon seeing the AT&T logo, I said: "boring book, probably written by scientists (no offense)." Boy was I wrong. This is a well-written user's guide, a useful instruction manual for people with zero Unix knowledge. But I think Linux newbies like me will also appreciate this book. It includes an overview of the Unix file system, a tutorial on ed, vi, shell programming and awk; quite useful if you're new to the Unix environment like me. But for Unix gurus, don't waste your money. There are better books out there and this is not an O'Reilly. In fact, most of the stuff written in this book is online, more in-depth at that, anyway. Sure, they're doing one hell of a job at LDP but nothing beats reading ink on pulp. Plus, this book is a real bargain, at least in this part of the world. It cost me roughly ... So if you're still struggling to learn Unix or Linux, this is a good starting point. The book was first published almost two decades ago but the material it covers is still significant. This is not a Linux manual, obviously, but still is a good reference material. So don't expect a Linux-How-To, a Gnome tutorial or chapters on XFree86 or PPP configuration. Go to ... instead. As I've said, the book is not for Unix gurus. But I think Linux newbies like me will appreciate this book more. Comment | | (Report this)
