Reader Reviews
I teach at a small college and just gave a course on XP from this book. My impression is that this is a repackaged Windows 2000 Pro book, updated with XP Pro screen shots. Since the two systems are so similiar, this approach works most of the time. However, there are some technical errors. For example, the book states that Windows 95 OSR2 can be upgraded directly to XP Pro, even though the Microsoft web site says the contrary. This was true for Windows 2000 Pro. A practice question (P 32, #9), probably also left over from Windows 2000 Pro days, suggests Windows 98 as the best choice OS when security is not a priority. Microsoft today of course disagrees, recommending XP Home Edition, but that probably didn't exist when this question was written. If you do buy it to prepare the 70-270 exam, make sure that you also get the companion lab manual. The hands-on exercises are much more thorough than the ones in the text book. This is the third book I have used to teach XP Pro, and sadly, I can't really recommend any of them.
