From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8AA chronology of Slavery that uses high-quality black-and-white and full-color maps, paintings, and reproductions, along with primary-source documents on every page, to grab readers' attention. This broad overview covers, or at least presents a smattering of information on the Middle Passage, plantation life, abolitionism, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. Olaudah Equiano, the Amistad affair, Charles Ball, and Harriet Jacobs are also mentioned. Other anti-slavery notables such as Frances Kemble and Mary Prince come from the British tradition and may be new to American audiences. Each topic includes an introductory description, illustration, defined vocabulary, and historical quotes with explanatory notes. Unfortunately, the busy patchwork effect of boxed material laid out at odd angles across the pages weakens the presentation and detracts from its coherence. A repetitive graphic pattern of a neck chain across the top of each spread seems overused and gratuitous as page decoration. This information is too serious and sensitive for such a careless, overdesigned layout.AJanet Woodward, Garfield High School, Seattle, WA Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.
