Gr 6-10-Woodson pioneered and devoted his life to the study of African-American history. He established a research association and journal, managed a publishing company, and sponsored a nationwide observance of Negro History Week. This balanced and documented account focuses on the historian's successes and failures (his prickly personality alienated many would-be supporters). Black-and-white photographs appear throughout. Patricia and Fredrick McKissack's Carter G. Woodson (Enslow, 1991) is the only other biography of Woodson for young people and Durden does a good job of highlighting his contribution toward raising an awareness of African-American cultural heritage.-Janet Woodward, Garfield High School, Seattle, WA
