Product Review
The five-volume Encyclopedia of African-American Culture and History is the ultimate reference work on the lives and significance of African Americans. Since it was published in 1996, however, scholars, students, and general readers have asked for a single-volume version. This book, part of the Macmillan Information Now Encyclopedia series, fills that need. Noted scholars such as Gerald Early (Washington University), Robert Hill (UCLA), and Nell Painter (Princeton University) have contributed over 400 entries on a wide variety of subjects, from Hammerin' Hank Aaron to zydeco. Many of the entries take the form of brief biographies of important African Americans, including civil-rights activists Ella Baker and Martin Luther King Jr., musicians Ray Charles and Miles Davis, writers Alex Haley and Toni Morrison, and sports figures Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Tiger Woods. Other entries focus on important events (Dred Scott v. Sandford, the Attica uprising), artistic movements (Harlem Renaissance, gospel music), places (New Orleans, Tuskegee University), and broader subjects (abolition, reconstruction, folklore). Throughout the book, cross-references, quotations, and definitions of unfamiliar terms appear in the margins and a detailed index helps you find what you're looking for. The text is scholarly yet readable and would be a valuable addition to any library. --C.B. Delaney
