From School Library Journal
Grade 5-7-A comprehensive overview of the role of Christianity in the lives of African Americans. According to the book, "The term 'Black Church' does not refer to any one institution; instead, it is a collective name for the myriad of Christian churches and denominations African Americans created to worship as they pleased." The seven chapters take readers from the early periods of Slavery (1540-1808) to the 1990s when, "Black Churches experience incredible growth in numbers as middle-class, young African Americans make the decision to return." The chapters "The Civil Rights Movement and the Black Church," "Leaders in the Black Church," and "The Role of Music in the Black Church" give readers a quick survey on greater topics. The chronology, the list for further reading, and the index are all useful. Historical as well as contemporary black-and-white photographs appear throughout. From Booklist
Gr. 5-8. This volume from the African American Achievers series focuses on the history of the church. So broad-based is the topic that it necessitates discussing the major events and movements in African American history, beginning with the arrival of African slaves in America and the disruption of their social and religious structures. As the story moves on through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, individuals are identified as leaders in the church. Though there is little discussion of particular denominations, Lutz provides a serviceable overview of the history of religious life in black America and points out how it is inseparable from other aspects of the culture such as music and the struggle for civil rights. Black-and-white photographs illustrate the text. A chronology and bibliography are appended. Carolyn Phelan Copyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved
