    From Publishers Weekly
Miller, a freelance writer and photographer, presents a timely plea for the preservation of the largest wilderness area in the United States, now threatened by oil and gas development. A resident of Alaska who has traveled extensively in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, she describes vividly the wonders of this awesome 19-million-acre preserve in Alaska's northeastern corner, from its coastal plain to its mountains, glaciers and rivers. She tells the history of the establishment of this invaluable preserve in the 1950s and describes her experiences at the neighboring Prudhoe Bay oil fields, documenting the effects of oil development on a previously untouched arctic region, and concluding that such development would be devastating for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. From Library Journal
Drawing on several years of exploration of this northernmost wildlife sanctuary, Miller interweaves personal adventure, sensitivity to the environment, anecdotes of regional history, and events pertaining to use of the area by natives. Her book is easy to read, but lacks distinguishing features. Richard Nelson's The Island Within ( LJ 10/1/89) and Tom Walker's Shadows on the Tundra ( LJ 12/89) are both more substantive and better-written books covering the same ground. Given the number of books on this topic, this is not a necessary purchase.

    Reader Reviews
I have just read Midnight Wilderness and found it to be a compelling account of the mystery and majesty of America's Far North. The authors transports the reader to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge enabling our mind's eye to experience vicariously the splendor of its fauna and flora. As I put this book down, I see the awesome Porcupine Caribou herd thundering across the summertime coastal plain, semipalmated sandpipers, musk-oxen, Dall sheep, wolves, Pacific loons, Lapland longspurs, snowy owls, tundra swans, and arctic foxes. Now more clearly than ever before I see the connections between and among the Arctic's wild and pristine physical and living communities. And, I feel compelled as never before to add my voice to those of the many others who understand why this awe-inspiring wilderness that is unequalled anywhere else on earth should be protected and preserved for future generations.
