From Library Journal
This celebration of the American Museum of Natural History's first 125 years is chock full of natural and cultural history lessons, as well as being a historical narrative of the museum itself. The descriptions of the many museum expeditions, covering such diverse places as the poles, the Pacific Northwest, Africa, the American Southwest, and Mexico and led by such noted explorers and scientists as Robert E. Peary, Carl Akeley, and Margaret Mead, are fascinating and entertaining tales. The more than 240 illustrations and color plates complement the text very well. Not an essential purchase, but it should be considered for public and academic collections. [A BOMC dividend and selection of the Natural Science Book Club.]?Nancy J. Moeckel, Miami Univ. From Booklist
To celebrate its 125th anniversary, the great institution on New York's Central Park West that is one of the city's most enduring visitor attractions fields an art-book-style review of the expeditions it has sponsored for the sake of expanding its collections as well as scientific and general knowledge. The text recounts those archaeological, anthropological, and paleontological forays in chapters concentrating on particular parts of the world (e.g., the North Pole, the Gobi Desert) and particular objects of inquiry (e.g., the earliest Americans, dinosaurs). Accessibly written, the text definitely predominates, but the many pictures, if not each worth a thousand words, are quite often as interesting. They include everything from a fascinating engraving depicting an early conception for the museum in which entrance was to be underground from Central Park, to hand-colored lantern slides, to photographs of and by such great scientific explorers as Roy Chapman Andrews and Carl Akeley, to modern colorplates of gorgeous items from the museum's collections. Great browsing, great reading. Ray Olson
