From Booklist
Greenwood, which has produced an extensive number of resources on American ethnicity, has begun a new series, Chronologies of the American Mosaic. The aim is to provide a succinct review of the long histories of the ethnic groups in an almanac format. White, author of American Indian Chronology, is a university reference librarian with many reference works on Native Americans to his credit.
Beginning with prehistory, the work is arranged first by centuries, next by years, and finally alphabetically by broad subjects such as "Language" and "Social Organization." The use of abbreviations for many of the subjects (LANG, SOCI) may confuse some readers, who will need to refer to the list of abbreviations at the beginning of the volume. Entries are clear, balanced, accurate, and generally of appropriate length for the topic.
The information is current, such as noting the deaths of well-known persons in October and November 2005. Users will see the growing activism and assimilation through the decades, while boxed sidebars of quotations bring out the context, and often the suffering, of American Indian history. . Some black-and-white illustrations and photographs dot the text. A glossary and a good bibliography direct the user further. The index, although accurate, is sparse and will not be very useful in quickly locating information.
Although substantial reference resources are available for American Indian history, this inexpensive, attractive volume will be useful as a supplemental resource in high-school and public libraries. Arthur Meyers Copyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved
