I appreciate the authors honesty regarding the plethora of presuppositions guiding present research on ancient Isreal. However, what she seems to give with one hand she takes away with the other. After an introductory historical delineation of working assumptions she states that she will not subsribe to any in particular but rather will simply review the assured results of contemporary socio-cultural scholarship. Paradoxically, the rest of the book is an excursion from tentativity to provisionality.A worn modernist model is used to divide chapters by ages (i.e. bronze, iron, etc)and a distinctly "minimalist" anti-orthodox bias rears its ugly head contrary to her aforementioned foreswearing of particular subscription.Additionally, a postmodern pluralistic flare pervades the effort and inclusivity of various perspectives is characteristic except for the overt exclusion of any conservative contributions. I have seldom, if ever, seen a study of more and more about less and less result in finally knowing everything about nothing.I thought that it was Moses who wondered in the wilderness, McNutt and company have proved me wrong!
