    From Publishers Weekly
In 1999, Salt Lake City filmmaker Austin won the People's Choice Award at the Banff Film Festival with his documentary about a coast-to-coast bicycle trip, and this book retraces that 4,800-mile trek. It began when Austin, his brother and a friend left California in 1997, pedaling east, hoping "to see America to get to know the people and to see if they were as heroic as we'd always believed." Seeking the "Perfect Hoop" in smalltown parks and schoolyards, the fun-loving jocks pedaled through oppressive heat, mosquitoes, traffic snarls and thunderstorms. The 100-day expedition ended in Springfield, Mass., where they gave the Basketball Hall of Fame their "Bball" with its "imprint of humanity," signatures collected from "nice folks" who gave them food, shelter and money. Those "true fans," however, are only superficially sketched in these pages. Although Austin obviously yearns to score points as a modern-day Kerouac (who is cited throughout), he doesn't quite succeed. Devising a brand strategy with flashy Web site marketing (www.truefans.net), he follows the money, lecturing, selling DVDs, creating clever pitches for funding and developing True Fans the Musical. His book, however, is just a ho-hum travel journal. Eight-page black and white photo insert not seen by PW. (Oct. 1)

    From Booklist
Austin, his brother, Jared, and best pal Clint mounted their bicycles in Venice, California, and headed toward the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. They had an official NBA basketball--to be autographed by all those who assisted them on their journey--some peanut butter, and a little camping gear. Their trek became a self-propelled Blue Highway for hoop junkies. Coal miners, fast-food laborers, and even a guy who claimed to own a town in Nevada befriended the trio. Along the way, they engaged in pickup games whenever they could, looking for enlightenment as cosmic as the meaning of life or as mundane as the best cheap eats in town. In addition to this print account of their odyssey, Austin also made a documentary film called True Fans that was the People's Choice winner at the Banff Film Festival. Readers after basketball insights here will be disappointed--the game is mostly an excuse for the road trip--but if one is out for laughs and a revealing look at average Americans, this is the right book. Reader Reviews
Sludge, Sprinklers, The Perfect Hoop. What is this all about? When I first purchased True Fans I assumed it was a book strictly about basketball. After reading the first few chapters I realized it was a book about three guys from Utah who were on their way to becoming heroes for their love of the sport. Along their journey they also came across many great Americans who also became heroes for their acts of kindness in helping Dan, Jared & Clint reach their destination. These American Heroes are the names on the basketball enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame, brought there by the 3 friends. You'll also read about their battles with water sprinklers, and how they survived on sludge, a 700 calorie, carb loaded casserole of pasta, rice & soup packets. You'll also find out how they found the perfect hoop, nailed to a barn in rural Indiana. True Fans is a book for everyone, very inspiring as well as very entertaining. After reading it, you will, become a TRUE FAN !!!!!!! Comment | | (Report this)
