    From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6-While the facts are accurate and clearly presented in boxes inside each picture, the dialogue is somewhat contrived and simplistic. The real problem, though, is with the art. The illustrations don't really show what happened in any detail, the colors are muted, and the pictures aren't very exciting. Considering the action taking place, these scenes are disappointing. In crowd scenes, the people are faceless, which looks strange, and in some cases almost frightening. Two pages of facts about the Tea Party are appended. An additional purchase.-Ronnie Gordon, Brooklyn Public Library, NY

    Reader Reviews
The criticism from the School Library Journal is opinion and not neccessarily true. Granted there are faceless crowds but there are also depictions of the main characters that are quite realistic, like the images of Sam Adams and other memebers of the Sons of Liberty. I would also disagree that the colors are muted. Rather they have a particular style that lends itself to another time period and the actual act of the Boston Tea party being carried out at night. I believe that the graphic novel coloring is evident throughout the book; it is a coloring style of the graphic novel. That said I found this book in the Graphic History series to be exciting for young readers in middle school. The basic facts are all here. One of the nice educational aspects of this book is the use of primary sources. Direct quotes are incorporated into the dialogue, highlighted by a yellow background. This book is a good starting point for further study into this major event in American history. The young student will be exposed to The Sons of Liberty, Sam Adams in particular,Paul Revere, John Hancock, Fisrt Continental Congress, East India Company, Governor Hutchinson The Intolerable Acts, Tea Act, Townsend Act, the concept of a boycott and the displeasure of the colonists and the resulting events that took place in Boston Harbor that contributed to the Revolutionary War. The four chapters provide enough information, in an entertaing manner, to ignite the students imagination and search in the provided suggested internet sites and bibligraphy. One of the suggested books for further reading is The Boston Tea Party (Kaleidoscope). This graphic novel is an excellent source for students whose first language is not English, the reluctant reader or student who just wants history to come alive. Recommended for middle school and community libraries. Comment | Permalink | (Report this)
