Product Description
Napoleon has often been considered to misunderstand the navy. Being an artillery officer, he was given to precise calculations and never quite accepted that the wind was more important to ships than his orders. However, thanks to the Emperor's pragmatic measures during 1800-1801, the French navy emerged from chaos for the first time in over a decade. The history and uniform of Napoleon's sea soldiers is here explored by René Chartrand, in this worthy edition to Osprey's Men-at-Arms series, with a wealth of illustrations including eight full page colour plates by Francis Back.
Publisher Description
Packed with specially commissioned artwork, maps and diagrams, the Men-at-Arms series is an unrivalled illustrated reference on the history, organisation, uniforms and equipment of the world's military forces, past and present.
Reader Reviews
Rene Chartrand is undoubtedly the best author today that is turning out military history under the Osprey label. An excellent historian and researcher, he is careful, methodical, and writes with wit, style, and accuracy. This volume on a little known and neglected subject is a minor work of art. There is more information packed into this small volume than one can digest in one sitting. In many ways, Napoleon's navy was a disappointment. Napoleon recognized the importance of seapower and gave his navy the ships and the manpower to win the naval war with Great Britain. What he couldn't do, unfortunately, was give it a tradition of victory. Hidebound by admirals more worried about keeping their ships afloat than getting to sea and fighting the enemy ship to ship, the French navy generally was defeated in fleet actions, and in ship to ship fights. That was not always the case, however. French captains that slipped out of port were successful in the Indian Ocean. Napoleon's best admiral, Latouche-Treville, beat Nelson in three minor fights. Durand de Linois, a tough sailor from Brittany, beat six English warships at Algeciras with three of his own in 1801. These are points Chartrand brings out in this superb volume. There were also interesting points about the French navy of the period. Unlike the British and Americans, the French had no Marines. Their function aboard ship was taken by army 'garrisons' that were assigned to the fleet. The naval artillery was a separate arm that was considered elite, and did extensive service ashore with the Grande Armee. This was quite possibly the greatest service the navy performed in the period and it contributed greatly to the Grande Armee's combat power. They served ashore as infantry, artillery, engineers, and supplied flotillamen to man ships on large rivers, such as on the Danube in 1805 and 1809. They also served at the crossing of the Berezina river in November 1812, helping to build the bridges that allowed the Grande Armee to escape from Russia. They provided personnel for four large infantry regiments in 1813 that were compared in steadiness to the Imperial Guard. All this and more is apparent in this volume of much fighting, high deeds, and the navy that could have been
