From Booklist
The Smithsonian Natural History Series has found the ideal contributor to describe the natural history of Europe's westernmost large isle. Viney writes a weekly column for the Irish Times in which he describes life on the shores of what is often cited as the most gorgeous place in a gorgeous land, the mountain-ringed fjord of Killary Harbor. Here he covers the geological formation of Ireland, competing theories of the genesis of its flora and fauna, changes wrought by agriculture and herding, and contemporary ecological controversies. He wears his learning lightly, and his prose never becomes ponderous with fact. Indeed, it often soars lyrically, as when he describes the thousands of seals on the Inishkea islands "growling and crooning in a restless kind of repose" or the migrating salmon as a "gleaming arc in the tumult of a waterfall." There are unfortunately few books on Irish natural history, and even fewer readily available in the U.S., which alone makes this book welcome. Its comprehensiveness and lyricism make it desirable for any library serving those interested in Ireland. Patricia Monaghan Copyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved
Book Description
In Canada alone, the boreal forest (also called the taiga) covers more that 1.5 million square miles, fully one-third of the country and twenty percent of the entire North American continent. Terminating to the north with the treeless tundra, this region is inhabited and utilized by indigenous people and is home to unique populations of plants and animals found nowhere else on the planet. J. David Henry challenges the perception of the boreal forest as an economic wasteland by explaining how economically and ecologically valuable it is.
