I had great hopes for this book as I usually enjoy these looks at a number of different types of sites, but the focus was so broad that there was just not detail for each site to truly bring them into focus. Frequently the descripion of the historical period overshadowed the archaeology. Also many of the individual artilces ended in such leading sentences that I was surprised to find a new article on the next page. My final complaint is that use of pictures did not seem to relate well to the text. Objects were mentioned in the text as either the most famous or else were described as being the most typical style, but then were not included with the photos. The opposite was true with pictured objects that were not reflected in the text. That said, it covered and grouped the sites in ways I had not seen before and was not a truly bad book, just not a truly great one. There are better ones available and I would recommend spending your money on one of them.
