Reader Reviews
This review is from: No More, No More: Slavery and Cultural Resistance in Havana and New Orleans (Paperback)
No More, No More: Slavery and Cultural Resistance in Havana and New Orleans written by Daniel E. Walker, introduces the reader to a whole new perspective of the life of slaves living in an urban environment in Havana and New Orleans. Walker introduces to the reader the ways in which slaves showed resistance to the white American's laws and imposed cultural norms by publicly performing traditional dances and songs and performing traditional dances. In his book, Walker introduces three main themes, one being definition of space which was created by the slave owners for the slaves in order to better control and wear down the slave into complete submission and acceptance of the system of slavery. The second theme involves the changing of the image of the African that was established by the dominant white race to better control not only the status of Africans in society, but also to discourage relationships between Africans in order to have complete control over slaves from even before the slave's conception by controlling mating. The third theme is the ever present racial hierarchy, which Walker modifies from the one that we all are used to in order to account for mulattoes, who weren't considered as low on the scale as the full blooded African and gained freedom from their masters much more frequently than the full blooded African. All of these themes presented in the book end up explaining many other phenomenon that were occurring, such as slave owners sleeping with their slaves, and why the slaves didn't resist sometimes, as a higher status and better life would be given to the offspring of this relationship. In all, these facts reported on by Walker show a much different image of the slave in Havana and New Orleans and give the slaves a much more human character unlike all the other readings that are found in history books on slaves. If you want to read a book with a fresh perspective and which flows very easily when read, pick this book up immediately.
