This is the riveting story of one family's trip to Cuba. In 1998, the author was informed of his grandmother's terminal illness, whom he had not seen in over twenty years. Curious to unravel the mystery that for many years has enshrouded Cuba, he convinced his mother and aunt to accompany him and revisit their native land. This, part diary, part memoir, is based on this trip. We are taken to Santiago de Cuba and to Boniato, a small town on the outskirts of the city rumored to have been built atop an old Indian cemetery. Along the way, we meet colorful characters and eccentric family members set against a rich background of folklore, local color and politics. We meet his aunt Mimi who as a girl thought a cow was her mother; or his great grandmother who died arguing with a flock of pigeons; or even ghosts rumored to haunt his small family house in Boniato.
About The Author
Jorge Reyes was born in Santiago de Cuba in 1971. He graduated from Barry University with a degree in Political Science and History. His previous book is called Your Body, a children's book on human anatomy. He is currently working on a collection of short stories. Reyes lives in South Florida.

Reyes is a tough cookie to break, and one of the most thought-provoking writers to read. A book like this one which is chosen every semester in some American universities as part of their courses must be good, or at least above the average. This book, published more than five years ago, still sells well and it seems to create a furor everywhere that Reyes speaks about it. I remember Reyes speaking at the 2002 or 2003 Miami Book Fair and though one of the most eloquent young writers I've ever met, he had to be escorted out of the room because some in the audience began to disagree with his political stance. Reyes, I remember, simply came back to face his accusers and in no uncertain term continued with his reading become more forceful and more cogent the madder he got. In these days of intellectual dearth, Reyes stands out.
