    From AudioFile
Professor Ramsden provides an great overview of the life and times of Winston Churchill, no doubt one of the greatest figures of the twentieth century. Churchill embodied the theory that it is the individual human being who makes history rather than soulless historical trends. As the right man at the right time, he epitomized Western resistance to fascism. He was out of power most of his political life, but such was his genius in oratory and the written word that he was rarely out of the public mind. Professor Ramsden, who has a distinguished list of academic achievements, talks one-on-one with the listener. We are not projected into a classroom, but rather we sit down with him and listen. His British enunciation--with a hint of Australia--comes across as learned and warm. D.R.W. © AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

This is a good day I think to, in the words of the stone in the floor of Westminster Abbey, "Remember Winston Churchill." After all, it's the 131st anniversary of his birth. John Ramsden is a fine companion for such remembrance. You can't really tell it from the Amazon.com cataloguing information, but this *is not* the audiobook version of Ramsden's acclaimed 2004 volume "Man of the Century: Winston Churchill and His Legacy Since 1945." In fact, it's a series of 16 lectures presented by [...]. If you want to go whole-hog and subscribe to their "course," you can find further material and even a "final exam" on their website. But if you're content, as I was, simply to listen to the seven CDs, you'll still get all you need to out of it. Not really "lectures," the 16 presentations in this series are really more like intimate discussions. Ramsden's not standing in a hall before a crowd, but seated (presumably) in a studio, and thus sounds like he's talking to the listener one-on-one. It makes for an informal and relaxed program, though there's no relaxing Ramsden's thoroughness and knowledge of his topic. Churchill's early life is covered in the first few lectures, with special emphasis on the first world war and the Dardanelles episode. The second war and related topics are covered in roughly the second half of the series, with dedicated lectures on WSC's dealings with FDR and Stalin. Personally, the talks I found most interesting were the ones on Churchill as writer and historian, and the later one on him as orator, providing the "roar" for the British lion at war. The final two lectures cover Churchill's "apotheosis" in the last 15 years of his life, and finally address the question of whether WSC can properly be considered the Man of the (Twentieth) Century. Readers of the book mentioned above will find some familiar material here, but not so much to make these discussions boring. I recommend this CD series for people who want to learn more about Churchill, and also for people who are already familiar with his life and accomplishments. Either way, this series is an excellent way to pass the time. Comment | | (Report this)
