    Product Description
John Hann focuses in this study on the Apalachee Indians and their interactions with the Spanish during the historic period. Following a description of the prehistoric Apalachee, Hann delves into the encounters between the Apalachee and the first European intruders.  He synthesizes historical and archaeological information on the establishment and growth of the western Florida missions, including pertinent data from the prominent and pivotal state of San Luis de Talimali.   A sympathetic view of the culture and customs of the historic Apalachee and a translation of Father Paiva’s impassioned ball game manuscript are followed by sections on Apalachee political structure, language, demographic trends, and mission economy.  Hann concludes with data on the demoralization of the Apalachee and its effects on the missions and, ultimately, on the exile and extinction of the Apalachee people.

    Book Description

“The first full-scale scholarly treatment of the Apalachees…. In Apalachee, seventeenth-century Florida…takes its rightful place in colonial history. Hann’s meticulous translations, exhaustive details and measured analyses will prove useful far beyond the bounds of San Luis or the borders of Apalachee Province. In this outstanding volume, Hann has laid a foundation for the historical reconstruction of Spanish and Indian society in the colonial Southeast.” –Amy Turner Bushnell, University of South Alabama

    Reader Reviews
Dr. Hann continues to generate impressive works on colonial Florida. This account focuses on the native province of Apalachee (near modern day Tallahassee) and details their story from Prehistory to the present. In the book, Dr. Hann incorporates transcriptions and translations of original Spanish documents as well as modern archaeological research. This book is the standard for Apalachee history.
