About The Author
Gordon Patterson is professor of history at the Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne.
Reader Reviews Readers who pick up this work will find the payoff well worth it. Patterson explores an often-neglected part of Florida history-the mechanics, technology and social history of pest control in the state. Prior to effective mosquito control, the state's wet regions were a major health hazard, imperiling lives and impeding economic development. The breakthrough advances against yellow fever and the adaptation of progressive science to combat pests helped make modern Florida what it is today; namely, a magnet for tourists and other settlers. Patterson explains how advances during World War II, i.e. the development of DDT, radically advanced state and federal efforts to defeat the insect threat. It also made it harder to justify scaling back or modifying these efforts when DDT came under attack as a health and environmental hazard. Finding a way to reconcile mosquito control and environmental preservation has been the major challenge since the 1970s. Smudge pots, DDT, bat towers, purple martin birdhouses, and other, newer innovations have characterized Florida's battle with the insect world, and is an ongoing one. Patterson tells it in a most interesting and engaging manner.
