While there are lots of books by professional and college football players and coaches, there aren't that many from people who are both intimately involved with a team but not actually part of it. George Cross is a respected academic, president of a major American university for decades on end. At the same time, he was intimately involved with a football team that was a national powerhouse, dealing with the hiring - and firing - of coaches, NCAA charges against the university, budget issues, and the student and alumni response to all of these things. This book is reasonably well written, and provides a fascinating look behind the scenes of a national football program at a high level. It probably won't be interesting unless you're interested in football in general, and maybe even OU in particular, but if you are, it's well worth reading.
