    From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5-Presented in a textbooklike manner, but without source notes or bibliography, this is a general account of Joan of Arc's religious beliefs, transformation into a soldier, victorious battles, and death. Sidebars appear on each page, along with full-color photographs and illustrations that illuminate the superstitions, customs, and daily life of the period. Diane Stanley's Joan of Arc (Morrow, 1998) is more detailed. For younger readers, Margaret Hodges's Joan of Arc (Holiday, 1999) and Josephine Poole's Joan of Arc (Knopf, 1998) are preferable for their picture-book qualities of layout, design, and painterly illustrations.

    Book Description
This Level 4 book is appropriate for proficient readers.

In Joan of Arc, children learn the amazing story of a young peasant girl in the 15th century who believed that she was being directed by the voices of saints to lead the French to freedom in battle against the occupying English. These 48-page books about fascinating subjects like pirates, mummies, and volcanoes are for proficient readers who can understand a rich vocabulary and challenging sentence structure. In addition to the stunning photographs, informative sidebars, and glossary, readers will find archival photographs and paintings. Averaging 4,500 to 5,000 words in length, Level 4 books are forty percent pictures and forty percent text. The Dorling Kindersley Readers combine an enticing visual layout with high-interest, easy-to-read stories to captivate and delight young bookworms who are just getting started. Written by leading children's authors and compiled in consultation with literacy experts, these engaging books build reader confidence along with a lifelong appreciation for nonfiction, classic stories, and biographies. There is a DK Reader to interest every child at every level, from preschool to grade 4.

    Reader Reviews
Joan of Arc was actually a girl but she dressed like a man and went to war. She was very brave. She believed that the saints were talking to her. She was born in 1412 in France. She was burned on a stake, but we still remember her because she was very brave and she was very much a risk taker. I liked the book because I like the way she was brave enough to tell the English King that she believed the saints were talking to her. The pictures in this book are small, but the colors are bright. I think they should have written more about her visit with the future king of France. I think a soldier who is quite shy would like this book. He would be inspired by her and be a bit more brave. Somebody who is interested in history would like this book too. That's why I like this book. I give it 9/10. Comment | | (Report this)
