The authors artfully bring the countryside of southern France to life with descriptions of archaeological sites, local legends, and anthropological and historical background. Suggested tours guide the reader from the painted caves of early humans through Gallic and Roman ruins, into the Age of Faith and religious wars, and to the maquis resistance in World War II. As a guide, however, the book fails. Most activities are simply listed, with little or no critical evaluation. More useful are Barbara Mandell's The South of France (Globe Pequot Pr., 1987), which suggests worthwhile lodging, restaurants, etc., and Robert Cole's The Traveller's History of France (Interlink Pub., 1989), which provides more interesting background reading on the country's past.
