In a conjoined biography of the two most recent conquerors of Europe, John Richmond deftly handles the plethora of French and German names and places. Quoted material is given a slight and appropriate foreign accent to differentiate it from the author's text. Richmond articulates well, and his British accent is easily understood. Avoiding the dullness of some historical material, he moves briskly through the years in question without seeming to hurry or falter. The frequent jumping back and forth between the early nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries causes occasional confusion not remedied by either the author or narrator. Well written and organized through extensive research, Seward provides the first scholarly comparison between Hitler and Napoleon. Each section of similarity is extensively described and well researched. A worthy companion to Alan Bullock's Hitler and Stalin which illustrates the comparison between Hitler and Stalin, though not as in-depth or detailed.
