In doing so, Roberts incorporates much previous David scholarship, either to support earlier interpretations or to offer his own alternative ideas. Though marked by a sometimes strained unwillingness to view any of David's actions as anything but well motivated, this account of David's career is complete enough to be understood by those without prior knowledge of the painter or French history. Suitable for students, general readers, and informed laypersons, as well as specialists.
