This was the last book written by the great religious, Catholic historian Christopher Dawson (it was actually published posthumously). The book reads as a pendant to Edmund Wilson's To The Finland Station. Indeed, both authors display a mastery of the English language and have a clean, non-academic, lucid style. This book is a mere 160 pages but no word is superfluous. It is dense--no surprise, given that it is meant as a history of ideas beginning with an overview of Christendom, the Reformation, the Counter Reformation and the Enlightenment. This is all briefly covered in the first couple of chapters. The meat of the book concerns the ideas which gave impetus to the French Revolution. The last couple of chapters carry those ideas through the various Romantic and Socialist permutations--ending with an analysis of the (then) current Cold War stand-off. Dawson analyzes this development through the prism of Catholicism, so it comes as no surprise that he presciently predicts the end of the Cold War as requiring the intervention of Christianity (too bad he did not live to see his prediction come true through the efforts of Pope John Paul II). This is truly a great work on par with To The Finland Station.
