Reader Reviews
Some people knew Henri Nouwen as a Catholic priest, others as a college professor, still others as a spiritual writer who remained true to his Catholic faith but had the ability to speak to people of all faiths with a depth of understanding few others ever achieved. He was part monastic and spent a sabbatical living with Trappist monks. He was an activist who spent years traveling to Latin America and using his experiences to highlight the importance of human rights. He spent what were perhaps his happiest years living with people of varying abilities and handicaps. He was a public figure millions claimed to know intimately but also knew he couldn't be his true self with all people. All of these statements describe Henri Nouwen, yet even combining each we still don't have an accurate portrait of this man. It seems that even ten years after his death, we're still unraveling and discovering Henri Nouwen. For anyone who loves the writings of Henri Nouwen and wishes to know more about him, the essays in REMEMBERING HENRI are indispensable. Editors Gerald Twomey and Claude Pomerleau collected writings from people who knew Nouwen in his various activities and ministries. While no one author tells a complete story, each contributes something that helps the reader understand him better. We see his restless nature, his ability to create communities and cultivate friendships, his deep spiritual side realizing the reason he was able to speak to people's hearts is because he was a fellow traveler and not a guru. We read reflections about his love of art, his insatiable desire to write about every experience he had as well as the challenges of editing a writer like Nouwen. Most of the essays are well written, and all reflect the love and devotion of those closest to Henri Nouwen. Readers who own more than one of Nouwen's titles (my guess is that like the claims of Lays potato chips, no one can eat just one, no one who has read Nouwen can just own one title), this book will help readers get to know a great author better. We also see in these essays how a gifted man did use his talents in an extraordinarily broad way and have reflections by some of the people who knew Nouwen best.
