    From Booklist
*Starred Review* The Columbia Book of Civil War Poetry (1994), the last major anthology on the theme for a general readership, was a handsome book full of fascinating poems. Its editors' condescension toward popular and deliberately political poems, however, diminished its historical interest. No danger of that this time. Without sacrificing literary distinction, editors Barrett and Miller limit their selection to work written between 1834 and 1891 by poets who lived through and often actively participated in antebellum, wartime, and aftermath events. In the thought-provoking introduction, Barrett points out the social and personal functions of poetry in nineteenth-century America. Ordinary people peppered their letters and journals with verse, family members and friends recited their own compositions at gatherings, it was commonplace to commission poems for public meetings, newspapers ran poetry next to reportage, and composers demanded a steady stream of accessible, topical verses to set as songs for stage and parlor. Barrett emphasizes, too, the many black (free and enslaved) and female writers represented in the book, evocatively analyzing particular poems and citing the performance and publication objectives these poets had for their work. An interpretational, literary, and documentary monument. Ray Olson

    Reader Reviews
Ably edited and expertly compiled by Faith Barret (Assistant Professor of English, Lawrence University) and Cristanne Miller (W.M. Keck Distinguished Professor of English, Pomona College), "Words For The Hour": A New Anthology Of American Civil War Poetry is an impressive and timeless collection of poetry from the era of the American Civil War. The poetry comprising "Words For The Hour" describes every aspect of the civil war and ranges from works by such famed writers as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, to a gathering of remarkable lyrics by anonymous poets. The Vessel Of Love, The Vessel Of State: The vessel of love, the vessel of state,/Each is ballasted with hats./Every Congress that we hold/Means the union is dissolved./But though the south is still enslaved,/By that oath the Union's saved,/For 'tis our love and not our hate/Interests us in their fate.
