Reader Reviews
This review is from: Rites of War: A Novel of Crisis and Combat at Sea (Paperback)
I found this book interesting in that it circles around virtuous people who just try to do their jobs and give everybody a reasonable fair shake, just like you and me. They have to work around the govt of the US and the govt of the UK because the govts are bad guys. In that sense, "Rites of War" fully synchronizes with the 3rd-Millenium literary sensibility of the govt as villain. It was a pageturner, even though the literary quality was a bit disappointing. If this turns out to be the greatest book you ever read, then you should spend less time with comic books. If you've a sympathy for WW3 lit, you will appreciate "Rites of War" as a good story that might have been done better. The characters appear to have no motives but just lurch from one hunch to another along with the plot. It's often difficult to see how one event leads to another, and the reader just has to imagine that somehow it makes sense. Some obvious impossibilities like warships sailing from the English Channel to the Orkneys in minutes get a five word description and never a further mention. Captain Jerusha Bailey bumbles from one situation to another and emerges a hero though any real person would have been dead at that point. Her backstabbing colleague, the mutineer Collins takes control of the ship, then inexplicably gives it up with apologies. Der UnterseebootKapitan Kanko is the best sailor in the world but like movie Germans, he says he is just following orders, and you can't rely on his character. Unlike the movie Germans, he seems like a nice guy who just wants to do his job and give everybody a fair shake like you and me, but he works for jerks, too. The Brit admiral Richardson practices his slimey limey hypocrisy in the service of the Queen. Toward the end when a B-movie would insert a bedroom scene, nuclear-armed Tomahawk missles miraculously appear to liven things up. Oh, well. If you ignore the radioactivated Germany, the good guys win in the end, I think. Who knows? Who cares?
