Product Description
The American Civil War has been the subject of historical study by both professional and amateur historians for decades. However, many times these studies have overlooked the more unusual and colorful events and people that were very much a part of the war but at a local level. In the town of Milledgeville, Georgia--the state capital during the Civil War-the actions of local soldiers and citizens alike tell a story that is unique to that locale.
As the reader is sure to discover in Civil War Milledgeville: Tales from the Confederate Capital of Georgia, the division between combatant and civilian at the local level is not always clear. With a natural curiosity to unearth the unknown, local Milledgeville author and historian Hugh T. Harrington has put forth a collection of tales and personalities that have until now gone untold or were forgotten.
Civil War Milledgeville shows that it is these often forgotten events and people that have shaped our greater understanding of the Civil War. From a womens riot to a confederate cavalry rescue, Hugh recounts local stories of heroism and cowardice, of success and strife, which illuminate the history of Milledgeville during these tragic years of conflict.
Reader Reviews Civil War Milledgeville is a series of non-fiction vignettes, each two to three pages in length, about unknown or forgotten Milledgeville, Georgia people and their unique experiences during and after the war. It's not the historical research that engaged me so much about this book. Rather, it's the characters the author chose to write about. From a black woman who experienced slavery and freedom with quiet dignity, to the Milledgeville residents who fought for the Union, to a local doctor who attended to both Confederate and Union soldiers with professionalism, to the wife of a Confederate general who trail-blazed for women's rights long before it came upon the American consciousness, Hugh Harrington paints a mosaic of life in the Civil War and post Civil War South that is hard to find in other books about this period. Many of the stories are eye-opening, such as the Union soldier from Wisconsin who, just three years after the war, made a bet with his northern friends that he could walk from Mississippi to Washington, DC carrying an unfurled American flag without being molested, while getting food and shelter in the process. The saga of Sergeant Bates reaffirmed my faith in our great country. Although the book is about people connected with Milledgeville, the capitol of antebellum Georgia, you don't have to be from that town to enjoy it. You just need to enjoy stories about our ancestors, and how they survived one of the darkest periods in our history. I highly recommend this book.
